'Artscapes: Bridging the Physical into the Virtual'
'Artscapes: Bridging the Physical into the Virtual' is an innovative project developed by Creative Futures Academy Fellows Sean and Daithi. The project aims to merge physical art with the virtual realm using advanced technologies such as 3D scanning, augmented reality (AR), and artificial intelligence (AI). This fusion creates immersive and interactive experiences that push the boundaries of traditional artistic expression.

Project Overview

The primary goal of 'Artscapes' is to transform static artworks into dynamic digital forms, enhancing viewer engagement and providing new tools for artists. The project employs a combination of traditional and digital revisualisation methods to ensure a comprehensive approach to planning and design.

Revisualisation Process

Traditional Methods
-
Sketches: Used for initial ideas and concept visualisation
-
Physical Models: Created to understand spatial relationships and physical dimensions

Digital Methods
-
Photos: High-quality photographs serve as references for digital conversion
-
Digital Designs: Detailed mockups created using software like Blender and Inkscape
-
3D Scanning: Physical objects and sculptures are scanned to produce accurate 3D files
-
AR and VR Prototyping: Tools like CamTrackAR are used to test the interaction of digital and physical elements
A notable achievement was the scanning of final-year students' exhibition work, which received a very positive response from the public on the opening night, May 28th.

Workshops and Planning
The project began with an initial meeting with IADT staff members, followed by a workshop where Sean demonstrated techniques for scanning physical objects and integrating them into a 3D environment. The planning and output process included concept development, digital conversion, interactive design, prototyping, and continuous feedback and iteration.

Technology and Software
The project utilised a variety of software tools, including:
-
Blender
-
Inkscape
-
CamTrackAR
-
LumaLabs.ai
-
MyWebAR
-

Conclusion
'Artscapes' was a highly experimental project that provided valuable insights and learning opportunities. The combination of traditional and digital previsualization methods helped maintain a balance between artistic creativity and technological innovation. The project showcased the possibilities of merging physical and virtual art, democratizing access to these technologies, and empowering artists. It has laid the groundwork for future explorations, enabling both staff and students to incorporate these techniques into their work moving forward.
